A Note To Guys About Breastfeeding - By: William Jason
There are many decisions fathers can help to make whenever you are expecting your first child, and this can include what type of crib to buy, how much you want to pay for a car seat, and whether you prefer to use organic clothing for your newborn as well. However, one thing that is a personal choice is whether a mother decides to breast-feed or not, and I was surprised to learn when my friend told me several months before my daughter was born, that he told his wife she was not allowed to breast-feed. I had been reading everything I could get my hands on about having a baby, and everything I read sang the virtues of breast-feeding. So naturally I assumed he had a good reason for not allowing her to breast-feed, and when he told me the reason, it was less than a noble one. I told him that I thought his decision didn't make very much sense, but he was pretty adamant about how he felt about his wife breast-feeding, and I knew then and there that nothing I said was going to change his mind.
My friend was definitely not the type of guy who'd ever read a book about having a baby, so I guess I shouldn't have been surprised that he felt the way he did, since he wasn't educated about all of the benefits of breast-feeding. If you are a guy and you are having a baby for the very first time, I strongly encourage you to read all about breast-feeding, and realize that you will be doing a great disservice to your wife and child if you discourage her from doing it. There is nothing quite like breast milk for a child, as it is what is produced by nature for him or her to have, and has all of the nutrients that your newborn will need. Giving your newborn formula, simply is not going to have the same benefits, as nature can not be replicated in a lab.
There are also a number of other benefits to having breast-fed child, and this includes saving a substantial amount of money that you would be spending on formula, which can get quite outrageous. Breast milk is of course free, which is a huge benefit. Furthermore, whenever your baby is being breast-fed, his or her bowel movements are not nearly as strong as whenever they are being fed formula. All in all, there are a substantial amount of reasons why you want your wife to breast-feed your child, as it is easily the best thing for any newborn.
