With all the delicious meals, get-togethers, loved ones and gifts, and an excuse to finally put on that snowflake-bedazzled sweater you purchased last summer - there are many things to be joyful about during the holidays. But prior to the holiday season, you should be sure your gleaming smile is in top condition. Even if it's much more of a grimace because that last slice of pumpkin pie was just taken by your brother-in-law (as if he needs it), dentists say that your teeth should be well cared for especially during this fast-paced and potentially stressful time. Here are a few things to be aware of with regards to holiday dental hygiene, as well as some tips for keeping those chompers at their best beyond the New Year.
Of course, the basics still apply, but perhaps even more so. Dentists recommend that we step up our normal brushing and flossing routine, simply because we tend to eat more meals, snacks, and (especially) sweets during this time of year. One handy idea is to carry a toothbrush in your car or purse so you can give your teeth a quick brush between engagements.
But there are other ways the holidays can be hard on your teeth. Hard candy, un-popped popcorn kernels, walnuts, and the pesky packaging that stands between you and your shiny new toys can all wreak havoc on your pearly whites. Here, you will just want to use common sense. Be careful not to chew anything that could crack a tooth or damage your dental work, and break out the nutcracker and scissors when necessary. Sedation dentistry is great, but you don't want to have to make any emergency appointments to replace a crown or filling, or fix a cracked or chipped tooth - when all you really want to do is be at home playing with your new gizmos in your pajamas.
It's difficult to be in good cheer when you are around someone whose breath could stop Santa's sleigh (we're looking at you again, brother-in law). Unfortunately, there are a lot of holiday foods that can lead to disagreeable breath. To be at your most pleasant, watch out for yams, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and (believe it or not) candy canes. Either avoiding these foods or being prepared for a quick brush after eating them will allow you to bellow your "ho ho hos" with the appropriate confidence and gusto.
If you follow the previously mentioned tips, you can have a healthy and happy holiday season, as well as a sparkly smile to match the snowflakes on your sweater.
