Weight Loss Basics
- By: Bobby Brewster
Almost every person struggles with his weight at some point in his life. Sometimes a weight gain can be blamed on hormonal disorders or other health problems that keep the body from burning fat. Other times it is the person's fault for not paying attention.
If you have been trying to lose weight for a while you've probably already tried to find success with most of the fad diets that are currently popular. How much weight have you lost and kept off with these diets? Probably not any at all. The fact is that weight loss involves more work than is required for most of the popular fad diets that are out there. Here are some weight loss hints and tips that the fad diet authors want to keep from you.
Cut out all drinks but water. You might find this hard to believe but one of the easiest ways to drastically cut down on how many calories you consume is to cut out the soda, the juice, the energy drinks, the booze and all of the other drinks you take in except for water. The best thing to drink is cold water. Water does not have any calories. It keeps your body hydrated properly and it is important for the rest of your health as well. It all depends on the type of soda you drink but cutting out even two servings of the stuff can reduce your caloric intake by around two hundred calories. Not only does replacing other drinks with water cut down on your calories it also cuts down on your sugar and high fructose corn syrup consumption and cut out other ingredients that might be harmful for your health.
Don't skimp on the strength training; it is just as important as aerobic exercise and cardiovascular training. You probably only think that you need to work on your endurance and raise your heart rate. The fact is that if you don't work on strengthening your muscles you won't ever be able to build your workout routines. Being able to make your workout routines more intense over time is what gets you into shape.
If you let yourself reach an exercise plateau, it will be harder for you to lose weight and stay in shape. Strength training is a must if you want to get healthier.
Keep a food journal for a while. This might seem like a giant pain but it will help you in the long run.
Keeping a food journal isn't about tracking each and every calorie that you take in (though it can certainly be helpful when you are putting together your daily workout). Doing this will help you figure out what kind of tastes you like the best and what kinds of foods you tend to crave. The key to making your diet successful is to replace the unhealthy foods you crave with healthy alternatives with the same tastes. For example: instead of reaching for strawberry candy or ice cream, eat some strawberries! Your food journal will help you with this because it will increase the likelihood that your diet will be successful.
People everywhere are concerned with weight loss. Just about everybody thinks that he (or she) could stand to lose a pound or five. Approaching the weight loss process correctly is the key to losing weight in a healthy way. If you try to use unhealthy methods to drop down in weight you just make it more likely that you will gain the weight back (if you manage to lose any at all). If you aren't sure which approach to weight loss is best, ask your doctor or a professional health care provider for help.
