The Job Interview

Author : Connie H. Deutsch   Top Author

Ronald looked around the waiting room. "A bunch of losers. Who goes to a job interview wearing flip flops? And oh, my goodness! Didn't that guy look at his shirt before he put it on?" The wrinkles were bad enough. But catsup stains? Really? Ronald groaned under his breath. If Uncle Norman hadn't told him about the job opening, if he hadn't stressed just how lucrative it could be, he would have marched out five minutes ago, pressed shirt, shined shoes, and all.

Forty-five minutes later, he still hadn't been called in for his interview. "What the hell is taking so long? One look at these losers and the room should have been cleared out in ten minutes."

Finally, twenty minutes later he was called in to the Human Resources Department and told to fill out several forms and then take his place at one of the computers and take a test.

As Ronald was walking over to the bank of computers, one of the losers was walking away and grumbling, "Boy, that was hard. No one told me I'd have to take a test. They just told me I'd have to fill out a job application."

Ronald's stomach started to clench. His uncle hadn't told him about a test, either. "Uncle Norman is just full of surprises. He didn't tell me I'd be sitting in a waiting room with a bunch of losers who don't know how to dress for a job interview or that I'd have to take a test, and yet he keeps telling me that I'm his favorite nephew."

He sat down at the computer and logged in. Within minutes he realized that this test was ridiculously easy. Fifteen minutes later, he logged out and went to find the HR director and asked her to grade his test results while he waited for the interview.

The HR director came back a few minutes later. "I have good news and bad news for you. The good news is that you scored 100% on the test. The bad news is that you may not get the job because the boss doesn't like to hire anyone who is smarter than he is."

Then he was called in for his interview and he almost died of culture shock. The boss who was interviewing him was the same one he saw in the waiting room with the wrinkled shirt with catsup stains and wearing flip flops.

"Your Uncle Norman is a great guy and he spoke very highly of you but I don't think you'll fit into our culture. We're a very informal company and you're dressed as if you were applying for a job in our Finance Department."

"But that is the job that I'm applying for."

The boss shook his head. "I'm sorry, Ronald, but the job application you just signed is for a job in the Caribbean as a tour guide, taking people scuba diving, rock climbing, snorkeling, and going on nature hikes."
