Dare To Dream

Author : Brikene Bunjaku

You know you are in trouble when the time comes for you to envision your future, where you will be, lay down your roots, connect and reconnect with people, what your house will look like, what you will look like, and you can’t allow yourself to do it. You try hard, only to be pulled back in by your own being! Resistance to allow yourself to dream a better and a happier future.

It is easy to blame the outside world forever for the way our lives have developed, or not. Yes, you’ve built that resistance up for a reason and it has served you at some point as protection from disappointment and hurt, but there comes a time when it is the very thing that is causing disappointment and hurt in your life. It is difficult to let go of your own creation and the invisible chains that you have woven around yourself to provide a false sense of security.

When they train elephants, they start by chaining the baby elephants to big boulders so that they can’t move too far. The thing is, that even when they grow up into the strong animals that they are and can easily drag the boulder behind, they still stay in place. At some point the outside restrictions are internalized. It is us that hold us back. It is hard to discard something that you used so often as a defense mechanism in the past, or something that was used to hold you back which now you use as a crutch to keep you from leaping. There comes a time when you are invited to dream, dream big, and you find that you can’t. You find that you don’t dare.

I used to view resistance as a something that we have control over, if we only opened our mind to new perspectives. If only we want better things for yourselves. It is today that I realized that open-mindedness can’t unsettle resistance and it won’t be controlled. Wanting can’t touch it either. The fear that is unleashed by even probing its fringes is so horrendous, that the pain it causes is physical as well as emotional. How does one go about persuading your inner child and young adult that it is safe to dream now? That you are allowed to dream? That you should dare to dream? I believe that one needs to start by respecting resistance and listening to it, not forcing it or fighting it. Be gentle and when the time comes, hopefully resistance will be no more.
