How And Why Red Wines Became Popular

Author : Stephen John

When people think of red wine, they think high-end drink. The fact that red wine goes with meals that involve steak, ribs, duck and lamb just hasn’t helped it become accessible to the masses. In addition, there are also some supposedly hard-and-fast rules about drinking it that makes people pass it over for soda instead.

In the old days, people merely ate red grapes and didn’t think of them as something they could make wine out of. Since grapes become wine even if they are left on their own, it is commonly believed that wine was discovered and not invented. One of the most popular origins tells of a young Persian, who was so fond of grapes he stored them in a jar marked “poison.” But busy as he was with his life and his harem of beauties, he soon became bored and one day, took a drink from the same jar he had stored the grapes in and found to his delight, a drink that tasted so good and revitalized him so that he brought a cup to the king, who loved it. From then on, the king ordained that grapes should be fermented.

From the time it first came into being, red wine has been drunk solely whenever there were occasions – the early Egyptians drunk it during funerals and in fact, stored them in clay wine pots to be drunk only by the elite. The masses had to make do with fermented juice or other drinks similar to beer. Wines were also drunk for medicinal purposes and used as part of religious sacraments.

It was also the ancient Egyptians who left indications by way of inscriptions and drawings about how wine was made – harvesting grapes and placing them in vats made of acacia wood, where workers trod on them while singing songs about work. To this day, this practice is common in the Port Region or Spain, but mostly as a tourist attraction more than a way of life. Find out more about the history of wines online.

Red wine is the most popular and common favorite among wine connoisseurs and wine lovers. In addition to its flavor, red wines are popular because it is actually the kind of drink one would prefer when relaxing and unwinding from a long day at work or as a great way to start conversations in social situations.
