Chicago Event Management Program: The Skills And The Drive To Be Successful

Author : Cameron Rochelle   Top Author

A Chicago event management program is one of the best ways to catapult yourself into the industry. A hands on approach is always the best way to learn, and this major city offers a wide diversity of companies and events that will help you hit the ground running. Aside from being home to McCormick Place, one of the largest event spaces in all of North America, there is an endless supply of big corporations and organizations in constant need of event planners.
Just as there is an endless supply of potential clients in the Chicago area, there is an endless supply of the kinds of events you could be organizing. From charity galas to tradeshows, you can easily find the niche that best suits your unique talents.

But deciding on where you want to study is only the tip of the iceberg. It’s also important to be prepared for what you are going to be studying. The skills necessary to be successful may not come naturally to you, like financial budgeting and time management skills. That’s why it’s important to be sure to choose a program that will meet your needs, and extend your abilities.
For instance, as a planner, you will be required to pay close attention to a lot of details over an extended period of time. You will be wearing many different hats at the same time, and required to perform at a hundred percent throughout your contract. Overlooking one aspect of the event could have a domino effect on the whole thing. For example, going grossly over budget on the food may mean you have to take the additional funds from somewhere else, like the amount of money allotted for decorations or marketing.

As a planner, you will need to develop an eye for detail and strong interpersonal skills. Not only will you be working directly with your client, but you will have to juggle as assortment of different vendors and contacts throughout the planning process. From catering to venues, you will be responsible for orchestrating the timing, the arrangement, and the cohesion of all these different factors; all while making contract decisions that will benefit and protect both you and your client.

Once you’ve completed your Chicago event management program, you will be prepared to be able to make smart decisions and maintain your professionalism when the unexpected happens. For any one event, there are several things that could go wrong. Maybe the D.J. won’t show up, or the company’s name is misspelled on the cake, or your flower vendor drops the ball on delivering fifty dozen roses to the right venue. It doesn’t matter. You need to know how to change gears and pull things off with style, in spite of it.

However, since you’re showing interest in the industry in the first place, this is probably the kind of environment in which you thrive. You probably love the challenge of organizing a beautiful event for hundreds, maybe even thousands of people. You probably get a thrill out of ensuring all the essential factors are in place and tended to, and the relief that comes when it’s over, and time to do it all over again.

By enrolling in a Chicago event management program, you can look forward to an engaging career that keeps you on your toes, and keeps boredom at bay. Each client, each event, and each venue will pose different opportunities for growth. Your passion will be your fuel as you apply yourself to your studies and learn the skills you need in order to navigate the unique and exciting terrain of event planning. And when it’s all over, you can sit back, slip off your shoes, take a deep breath, and make a toast to the person who made it all possible: You.
