Things To Do And Hotels In Newquay

Author : Howard Evans

Voted as one of the UK’s favourite seaside towns in the ‘Which’ holiday survey and also claiming the title as ‘Best Family Holiday Destination’ by a leading coastal magazine, Newquay has much to offer a broad-ranging section of people. These include those looking for short breaks away, romantic weekends or simply family holidays by the seaside. Not forgetting the young and trendy surf crowd who flock to Newquay for the outstanding surfing opportunities and fabulous beaches. Accessible by air, rail or road, Newquay hosts many events throughout the year, so it’s not just a summer destination – Newquay is open all year around.

There’s a big interest in local food and drink festivals. With the many artisan food producers and suppliers in Cornwall, Food and Drink Festivals are great fun and the ones to look out for. Here are just a few you may wish to attend throughout the year: Newquay’s Fish Festival, Newlyn Fish Festival, Cornwall Food and Drink Festival, regular Farmers markets, Falmouth Oyster Festival and the ‘Made in Cornwall’ Christmas Fair in Truro.

The vibrant night life in Newquay town centre benefits from all of this broad-ranging interest. You will find many bars and restaurants providing relaxed, laid-back venues to socialise and dine in after a day’s surfing or sight seeing, and the weekend party atmosphere continues through until the early hours in the town centre.

With some of the very best beaches in Cornwall, Newquay’s laid-back charm is here for everyone to enjoy. You will discover a total of 10 main beaches (Crantock beach, Fistral beach, Great Western beach, Harbour beach, Lusty Glaze beach, Porth beach, Tolcarne beach, Towan beach, Watergate Bay beach and Whipsiderry beach). With a choice of quality assured accommodation from budget bed and breakfast guest houses to grand sea view hotels, there are options to suit all tastes and pockets. For those seeking an escape from the vibrant night life and town centre, the Pentire Headland offers some outstanding hotel accommodation, just 1 mile from the centre, with the Pentire Hotel offering views overlooking Fistral beach area. There are also a few good local bars and restaurants on the Pentire Headland too, offering equally fantastic coastal views. Well worth checking out.

Newquay is perfectly positioned to go and visit the many attractions in and around Cornwall. If you are staying local, Newquay has its own Blue Reef Aquarium by Towan beach – well worth a visit. There’s also a Zoo, Steam Railway, a Fun Park, and a 26 acre park in the centre of Newquay called Trenance Park & Gardens. If you wish to venture outside the town, many other attractions in Cornwall like the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth or the Eden Project are all easily accessed from Newquay.

Whatever your fitness level, ability, experience or age, you will find a diverse range of activities to get involved with. From cycling, fishing, diving boating, walking to the more extreme adrenalin sports like coasteering, mountain boarding, kitesurfing, kitebuggying, bodyboarding and waveskiing to name but a few. Rest assured that you’ll be in safe hands too. Some of the UK’s top coaches work in the activity centres across Newquay and your guaranteed to have lots of fun along the way.

Newquay has an increasing number of green businesses too and there are 10 businesses in Newquay that have been awarded either Gold or Silver awards from the Green Tourism Business Scheme. GBTS recognises businesses and attractions that have demonstrated action on a range of areas including water efficiency, waste reduction, energy use, local support, ethical products and the environment. Businesses are judged every 2 years and the area looks to increase the number of ‘Green’ awards in the coming years.
