Attractions In Girona Spain

Author : Brian Petit

Founded by Romans, Girona is the capital of Costa Brava and is located several kilometers North of Barcelona. It is more of a historic city still spotting thick walls well conserved over the ages. There are lots of fun activities especially on the coastal area which all water and sun lovers will find most ideal while spending some time in the city.

Apart from all the water sports and fun on the sandy beaches, the city is also home to other tourist attractions making it very popular among visitors as well as locals. It especially has many monuments all of which are worth checking out while on vacation.

The Santa Maria Cathedral is one of the major attractions and dates back to the 11th century. It has amazing elements of the Renaissance, Gothic and Roman periods mostly visible on the Baroque fa├žade. The Pia Almoina and Casa Pators also known as the Renaissance justice palace are worth visiting and hold great architectural works. The two buildings are very beautiful and house important offices today.

The narrow but beautiful medieval alleys of the Juderia, a former quarter for the jewish community attracts visitors and is therefore another major attraction. You can have a glimpse of the stylish Romanesque and Moorish Bathes which were built back in the 11th century and used till 15th century. They still stand strong and have lots to offer to those interested in learning a little Girona history.

The city also has interesting stone and iron bridges which link the other parts of across the Onar River. Even though there are four bridges, the two are considered to be the most beautiful and most tourists would never leave the city without having the chance to take a view from the bridges. The multicolored houses of Onar Casa form the Girona character as they are very attractive since they almost look like they are loosely hanging on the upper part of the Onar's river bank.

This is a great city that is worth visiting while looking to spend a considerable amount of time in Spain. Even though it is yet to become one of the most popular destinations in Spain, it still has amazing things to offer and also has grounds waiting to be explored by those who find it interesting enough. There is always the chance to discover something new in the destination provided you have the interest and time to do so.
