Spain - Beautiful Cordoba

Author : Brian Petit

A religious culture of a number of religious denominations thrives here. These include Christianity, Judaism as well as Islam. Unlike in many other countries, all these religions have coexisted alongside each other over the years in the town of Cordoba, which featured as the Capital of Spain during the Moorish era.

Cordoba is home to the Greatest Mosque in Spain, the La Mezquita. The construction of the mosque was commissioned by King Abd ar-Rahman as an alternative of Mecca, the world's greatest mosque where Muslims are obliged to visit at least once during their lifetime. La Mezquita has a genuine script of the Islamic holy book, the Koran. It is also equipped with a bone Muhammad's arm, a fact that ranks it among the most consecrated places of interest throughout the world.

The Historic significance of the mosque is worth mentioning. The building that hosts the mosque was initially constructed as a cathedral for the Roman Catholic faithful under the reign of King Ferdinand the third. However some elegant prominent remains of the mosque when it featured as a church such as a number of prayer chambers have been preserved all along the years making the La Mezquita mosque an amalgamation of history, religion and art. Sight seers can access the mosque through the archetypal Islamic court of Patio de los Naranjos whose fountains and orange trees are of utmost importance when all is narrowed down to acts of ritual cleansing prior to prayerful meditation.

Juderia is an ancient Jewish Quarter located to the north of the Mezquita mosque. It served as the heart of activities allied to the Jewish way of life in the middle age epoch. There have been minimal changes as regards the condition of the quarter as seen in yester years. The region still boasts of a number of constricted boulevards lined with washed-out limestone dwellings as well as some amiable terraces sticking out of the towering walls which host several shops on the streets below.

Cordoba also hosts a number of festivities held yearly with respect to a choice of pious figures. The highly publicised is the Holy Week of Easter. It involves thirty two different pageants and close to sixty dais displays of statutes of saints below which multitudes of faithful worship.

The Easter season comes to an end with the Nuestra SeƱora de la Salud fair. It involves girls clad in gypsy or other outfits characteristic to the Cordoba community and chaps riding on horses parading the streets which are on the other hand are bustling with activity as dancing and drinking wine.

It is not worthwhile to visit Cordoba during the summer months of July and August due to extremely hot daytime temperatures which restrict many to air conditioned indoor activities. However, should you be obliged to visit then, you should carry along with you light clothing.
