Author : Brian Petit

Tarragona is a province in Spain and it has the capital city also with the same name. That city also has significance being the capital of Costa Dorada in Spain. It is a beautiful city in all aspects. It is located on top of a hill near the Mediterranean Sea. The city has everything that should be there in a modern city of the world.

Whether anyone likes it or not it is a fact that the Roman Empire ruled over Europe for many centuries. That has great influence on the European nations even today. Roman Empire is now a history for Europeans but their remains and monuments are valuable for all. The places that have such remains and monuments are valuable for many tourists especially the historians.

The city of Tarragona is full of monuments that belong to the Roman Era. There is an open Air Museum in the city of Tarragona that holds a great historical value. There are many buildings present in the city of Tarragona that belong to the Roman Era and they are well preserved by the modern Spanish Government. These are the reasons because of which UNESCO has declared Tarragona as a World Heritage Site.

One of the reasons of fame of Tarragona is that it is surrounded by a big wall which was constructed in the times of Roman Empire. The total length of the wall was around four kilometers. With the passage of time there were changes and now the length is one kilometer along with having city gates and towers. That wall is very well preserved for public viewing and it's of great importance for the world.

There is a cathedral in the city which has the Gothic style of construction. It was constructed on the old Roman Temple. The place of this cathedral is inside a square and there are only two squares in Tarragona that belong to the roman era. The other square was the largest one in the Roman Empire. The length of the square is 318 meters while its width is 175 meters and it is worth seeing.

There is a roman circus, Roman Theater, Gothic Basilica and a church in the city which are all of great historical importance. Apart from that there are also many places of great influence in the city. Tourists that visit Tarragona have great memorable times which they never forget in their lives.
