Spain - Discover Mojacar

Author : Brian Petit

Mojacar is a serene and delightful region of Costa Calida situated within the south eastern Almeria zone of Andalucía. It has the benefit of outstanding fortification from the mountain ranges of Cabrera. Mojacar features as one of the ancient Spanish hamlets that still thrives in present day and whose historic past is worthwhile to explore. The ancient township is to be found two kilometres as of the Mojacar Playa beach and imposingly hangs onto rock strewn slopes of the adjoining mountains from which the vast horizon view of the pristine Mediterranean Sea and the countryside is breathtaking.

The historic past of Mojacar is traceable from the last forty centuries. Over these years, many civilizations of the Carthaginians, Greeks, Phoenicians, Moors and Romans have resided here culminating to a diverse an unmatched cultural heritage around the universe.

Mojacar exceptionally prospered during the Moorish rule during which the Moor castle was erected flanked by the expansion and fortification of the town. None the less, Mojacar perceived a number of gory conflicts about the nineteenth century. This had an adverse upshot as the town's fortunes began to dwindle down and many residents vacated to greener pastures due to relentless famine as the town is seemingly located on a desert region in Europe. In the early sixties governors settled on to giving out the land to prospective owners who would establish properties on it and the response was overwhelming in a positive manner and soon afterwards the economic sector of the town was back to its roots.

The town has since grown into an artistic metropolis with a number of arty architectural masterpieces which have consequently attracted multitudes of tourists and in succession brought forth a large amount of foreign investments from scores of overseas bargain hunters. This has largely contributed to a large number of expatriate citizens currently residing in Spain.

A neighbourhood legend asserts that Mojacar is the birth place of Walt Disney. The anecdote advances to declare that Walt Disney was a dishonest daughter whose mother worked as washerwoman who ran away to America to break away from the agony that existed in Mojacar at that time. Unfortunately she could not make ends meet for baby daughter and therefore presented her adoption to the Disney's couple only identified as Elias and Flora. No paperwork is available either in the annals of Mojacar or Chicago where the adoption procedure apparently came to pass and so the story is seemingly more of a fairy tale.

Mojacar is abundant with lengthy beaches which expansively extend to the Sopalmo and Granatilla shores from the Marina de la Torre. The best of them include the Bordenares, Cala del Sombrerico, El Cantal and the Las Macenas. They put forward an array of bars which most definitely suit the entire preferences.

Other noteworthy places of interest are The Moorish Fountain locally known as La FuenteMora which is perceptible from the ancient Roman era, the historic Church of Santa Maria (La Iglesia de Santa María) which was a fortress initially in the 14th century, The New Square (La Plaza Nueva), the Old City Gate (Puerta de la Almedina) which served as an entrance to the ancient tow of Mojacar during the Moorish rule. Last but not least is Old customs House (Casa del Torreón). As the name insinuates, this was the customs bureau and visitors paid their entrance fee here prior to being granted the right of entry into the town of Mojacar.
