Author : Trevor Price

For nearly two centuries, christmas cards have been an important part of Christmas gatherings. The cards usually feature artwork of either a spiritual or a secular nature on the front with a printed message of greeting within. Most people prefer to include handwritten notes within the cards, or a published Christmas letter providing updates on their own activities within the last year. While it's tough to gather exact statistics, it's approximated that nearly 2 billion cards are sent annually.Various reports say that the typical US home sends and receives between 20 and 28 cards every single season.

Christmas cards were first produced in a commercial sense in 1843 in London, when Sir Henry Cole commissioned a card having a scene by illustrator John Callcott Horsley.Victorian era cards in England usually featured elaborate styles augmented by pieces of satin or lace, cards in forms such as bells or candles and pop-up moments. In the US, printer and lithographer Louis Prang began printing cards in Massachusetts in 1875. US cards frequently depicted scenes of snowfall and animals frequent during northern winters. Throughout the two World Wars, cards often carried patriotic designs and greetings.

Today, christmas cards offer both equally religious and secular styles. Religious cards feature scenes based on the Christian traditions of the events surrounding the arrival of Jesus, and often include passages from the Bible in their greetings. Secular cards, or Holiday cards, typically consist of designs of Santa Claus, nature or wildlife, or humorous cartoons. The greetings wish the individual "happy holidays" or "season's' greetings".

For decades, businesses have sent Christmas cards to their consumers to market a feeling of a positive manner and help remind buyers of the firm's name and brand. This practice came about from the usage of trade cards of the 18th century, which were small cards handed out by corporations to current and potential customers. Eisenhower sent the first official White House card in 1953. Charity Christmas cards are issued by charity groups like UNICEF to boost funds for their business.

Since christmas cards originated in England, today they're a part of the Christmas custom in nearly all English speaking nations. In the majority of nations, together with those in western Europe, South America and Asia, New Year cards are the desired method for delivering greetings. Some nations do not notice both custom.

English conversing nations, or those who ended up colonized by England, stick to the custom today, by incorporating modifications. As an example, cards in Caribbean countries for instance Jamaica do not pinpoint the conventional winter moments of snow, but instead feature island settings. Hong Kong inhabitants favor hand-crafted cards making use of Chinese approaches.
