Breast Reconstruction To Rebuild The Contour Of The Breast

Author : Dr Sean Boutros

Breast reconstruction is a preferred choice among patients who have undergone a partial or full mastectomy.

Methods of Breast Reconstruction

There are two methods of breast reconstruction that can help you achieve shapely, attractive breasts -- autologous tissue reconstruction and reconstruction with implants. These reconstruction procedures can recreate and improve the bust line. The right method can be chosen by discussing its advantages and limitations with your plastic surgeon.

Breast reconstruction can be customized to meet each patient's aesthetic requirements and expectations. The procedure involves the use of a silicone bag known as expander prosthesis. It is used to expand the skin and soft tissue of the chest. Over a period of time, the bag is inflated with saline solution. Once the required stretching of skin is achieved, the expander is removed and the implant is placed.

Advantages of Implants (Silicone Breast Prosthesis)

• Surgery is simple and easy to perform
• Relatively short hospital stay
• Recovery period is usually quite short
• Option to choose the desired breast volume

Autologous tissue reconstruction utilizes the patient's own living tissue. DIEP (deep inferior epigastric perforator) flap breast reconstruction offers excellent results as it uses skin and fat from the abdomen to recreate the breast. Plastic surgeons recommend it as it gives the breasts their natural feel with decreased long-term complications.

Advantages of DIEP Flap (Autologous Tissue)

• A safe procedure with lasting results
• Mimics the tissue lost in mastectomy
• Gives the look and feel of natural breasts
• Least possible chance of complications

Recreation of the nipple and tattooing of the areola are the steps which follow after either of the two procedures. The nipple may be reconstructed with a local tissue flap or it may be augmented with a small piece of cartilage.

Why Choose a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon?

A board certified plastic surgeon's level of expertise in breast reconstruction is second to none. A reliable surgeon would explain about the procedure in detail and help you take an informed decision. Apart from that, such surgeons ensure that they rebuild the contour of the breast befitting the patient's body profile.
