Kitchen Design - Are You Making These Mistakes?

Author : Callum Leslie Walters

Remodeling and designing rooms in the house is fun and exciting. It provides an opportunity to infuse your personality into your living space and show off your creative side. It is also self-satisfying. The kitchen is a wonderful room to design because there are many things that can be done in that area. Kitchen designs can be contemporary or even futuristic. Or, some choose to outfit the niche with rustic styles that hearken back to the good old days. There are some pitfalls, however, that can ensnare someone while he or she considers changing up the kitchen. These are some kitchen design mistakes to avoid.

A huge mistake in general is that some people are tempted to do too much. The thought of solid, oaken cabinets complementing large appliances and hard, marble floors is rather enticing, but the cumulative cost of these items climbs quickly. Before visions of bathtub-sized sinks begin dancing in your head, it is crucial to formulate a budget from which you do not deviate. It is pointless to set the blueprints for a kitchen made up of woodwork and appliances that exceed your means.

Devising a budget is just one thing to take care of during planning. In the kitchen, much time will be spent preparing the day's meals, and that means that adequate room must be available in which to fix the food. Decorative countertops with all sorts of attractive angles may look good, but be sure that they serve their functional purpose as well. The countertop is also where small appliances such as toasters, blenders, and can openers tend to find permanent homes. That is why you must figure out how much room you will need to store them there as well as make breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Electrical outlets must also be placed near the proper section of countertop so that the small appliances can be plugged in.

As you can see, planning is essential to kitchen design; therefore, everyone is careful to measure the room, right? Not all the time. Quite often, someone has plans for the kitchen that are simply too big. Before you know it, a monstrous stove and enormous refrigerator appear at the doorstep, both hopelessly large and having no chance to fit in the kitchen. This is why it is essential to measure everything beforehand, decide where all of the appliances and furniture will comfortably and sensibly fit, and go from there.

As is apparent, many kitchen design foibles arise from unsound planning. Oftentimes, these mistakes come from moving too quickly. It is wise to take a breath and figure out what your budget can realistically handle and how well everything can perform its tasks in the space available. By being frugal and organized, you can identify these kitchen design mistakes to avoid.
