The Applications Of Stainless Steel Fasteners

Author : Harriet Wilson

Metals are the most common and widely used hardware to secure things so that they do not move. The only disadvantage with them is its corrosive and rusting nature. This led to the usage of stainless steel fasteners as they don’t rust or corrode easily. The importance of these fasteners can be understood by the wide uses they have in the field of military, construction, aerospace and other industrial applications. The other materials used for the manufacture are chromium and carbon.

These are widely used due to their rust proof nature, strength and their weather resistant capability. The various operations made by them are drill the panel or the steel structure etc. Some other applications are caps screws, deck screws, nuts, cotter pins, self drilling screws, sockets, spring nuts, cutting screws, thread rolling screws, weld screws, washers, machine screws, retaining rings, rivets, eye bolts, nuts etc.

Each job has certain requirements and demands, so the workers would know which one to select. During the work, the assistance of supervisors or training manuals can help them to select the appropriate one. The three basic types of industrial fasteners based on sizing standards are ASTM, SAE and ISO. They have their own type of measuring and manufacturing of fasteners.

Discussing about some basic characteristics of these fasteners, we can see that the material can be either high quality carbon steel or stainless steel. Where corrosion is a possible factor, these stainless steel fasteners are used. Corrosion depends on the metal characteristics and hence where the reduction of corrosion is crucial, stainless fasteners are used. This material is a versatile one and is used in a number of situations where the material is required to be strong and durable when compared to the other metals. So they are seen to be widely used in buildings that support a large amount of weight.

Nut and bolts are one among the many stainless steel fastening systems used widely. They meld together and act as a single unit. This process is known as galling and it happens due to the exposure of the chromium layer on the surface of the steel for a short time before fastening. Carbon is used to reinforce the steel compound. It is heat treated to make it strong and hard so that it will be able to withstand more stress and ultimately turn out to be finer elements. Depending upon the fastening needs and different fastening jobs, a wide range of are used. Thanks to the invention of these stainless metals, the fasteners became a widespread and inexpensive reality.
