Eradicating Those Stretch Marks With Laser Treatment

Author : Angela Faye Smithers

Lasers have found a booming popularity in recent decades. Lasers are now used in all types of medical procedures such as laser eye surgery, laser spider vein removal, laser dental treatments, removing tattoos and treating certain skin conditions. Lasers have been found to be the best way to remove stretch marks.

Stretch mark removal has become a popular procedure as middle class America has been seeking various methods of cosmetic surgery to minimize disfiguring conditions such as the unsightly skin tissue referred to as stretch marks. The most common cause of this type of skin is a pregnancy or a substantial weight loss.

At first, stretch marks appear bright in color with a reddish or purple tint to the lines. As time passes, the intensity of the color fades to a lighter shade. The skin is soft to the touch and appears indented or recessed. Stretch marks occur in the dermis. This is the area that helps the skin to retain its shape. Stretch marks can appear on any part of the anatomy but the most common areas include the abdomen, the thighs, the upper arm area, and the breasts. These scars are not detrimental to your health and they don't pose a health risk.

A large percentage of women develop stretch marks during the course of their pregnancy. They are most likely to appear during the third trimester when the force of the growing baby is the strongest. Weightlifters are also susceptible to developing stretch marks in the area of their upper arms and shoulder areas. Adolescents are also another category that has a tendency to form stretch marks because of the fast growth spurts experienced by many. In most cases, adolescents find that their stretch marks will fade with time.

Research has shown that the habit of using certain creams and oils on the skin during a pregnancy can help minimize a womans stretch marks. These oils and creams include the ingredients Vitamin E, elastin, and collagen hydrolysates. They can help minimize the stretch marks but they will not be able to prevent them completely.

A newer laser technique being used called fractional laser resurfacing. It is a new approach to treating the striae - another name for stretch marks. The method uses scattered pulses of laser light with only a small fraction of the scar tissue being treated by the laser. The result is small microscopic wounds. The body's natural reaction is to produce new collagen and rejuvenate the area. Laser resurfacing removes stretch marks while improving the appearance and texture of the skin.
