The Wonder Of Catholicism

Author : Ragie Bacuetes

I must admit I was a Roman Catholic before and I am being baptized by this religion. My father is a Catholic and my only young brother was baptized on other religion. Catholicism remains long here and for 400 years that Spaniards colonized Philippines their religion influenced as much. Except from Jesus we all also know Mother Mary and some apparitions of saints. Even the usual thing that catholic do, I also practice that before. I can go to their church anytime as long as there are mass. I remember before when we go to our province for vacation we normally visit the Baclaran church because that's what my father want. Before we enter the church their was an statue of angel who carry a holy water, my father hand dip his hand to that water and make sign of the cross so I just follow him. I am kind of curious about what his doing; why not just enter without that ritual. And now at least I understand but I am not sure they do that for cleansing their sin before they enter the house of God they were cleansed. Or they just have that kind of ritual for respect. As I go inside the church there are lots of images and statue of Christ is in the center.

My first visit in a Catholic church I was truly afraid because of the images and big statue that I saw their. But don't question me I was a little child before, innocent of Christ because my parents didn't tell me about anything about religion. Little by little I discover and know everything when I was growing. When I turn 7 years old we started to go in other churches so the practice of being a catholic was never practiced at all because my mother always bring me every Sunday in other church. I don't even know why, so until now I just see their ritual and not practice it at all. They have lots of prayers, which one of them I don't even memorize. Their songs are different for me but heartier. During holy week catholic are more devoted to do their rituals and also they are devoted to different saints. I am really amazed to the people who really know all the saints.

Being a Catholic is a reflection of what are Filipinos in the past years from the time we where colonized. Whether we have a bad experience with the priest during our Spanish period still it brings the faith in us and the practice of prayer really help to the Filipino from the time of depression. Thank you for Catholicism because they make us holy.
