Is Tankless Water Heater Convenient?

Author : Tom Irvine

Tankless water heater is considered as very convenient. Turn on the knob or switch and you can have the hot water at the temperature that you prefer. The hot water comes from the tankless water heater, although is not good for coffee or tea, but it is good enough for average daily usage. You can take a shower with it or you can fill up your bathtub for a hot soothing bath. The tankless water heater is easy to install, just give about two hours to work on it and you can readily enjoy the pleasures of a hot water bath.

The Japanese think that daily hot water bath is a good therapy. They believe in it so much that, before the tankless water heater was invented, they took hot baths daily. I could not think how cumbersome it had been then when the entire household staff are busy at heating gallons of water in a cauldron over burning wood, so that the master of the house can have his daily hot bath. How about in other areas where the winter season is very cold? I wonder just how they prepared their hot baths then when they wake up early in the morning. Probably, that is why in some countries, people take shower in the evening instead of in the monring? I can not help having these funny thoughts of being able to go back in time where there was no water heater. I would probably bring with me three tankless water heaters: one for myself, the other I will give probably to the Japanese king or Shogun and the last one in reserves just for the prettiest girl I will meet. I might just be treated as a hero, I think.

Another convenience of the tankless water heater is its portability. Let us say, you are renting a place and to enjoy hot water baths you installed one. A few months later, you have to move to another place, all you have to do is have it uninstalled and re-packed. Since it is relatively small, you can put it in your suitcase. As you arrive at your destination you could easily have the unit re-installed. For other kinds of water heaters, you will not be able to do it like this simply because it is complex to install. Sometimes, you will have to have a professional to install it for you.

Nowadays, the average size of a tankless water heater is less than three inches thick, about 18 inches in height and less than 12 inches in width. I remember the earlier models were pretty bulky. Also they did not have those built-in breakers that Trip whenever an electrical short circuit occurs. That is why the earlier models were not very safe. The modern tankless water heater is 100% safe.

Technology is advancing very fast. More and more companies realize that improving the energy efficience is the way to go for water heater systems. I will not be surprised if one day we will find a tankless water heater as small as a shower head where you can install it by plugging the unit to your shower head and abracadabra, you have hot water.
