Catamarans From Sailing To Power Yachts

Author : Stuart Hegerstrom

When you hear the word catamaran Hobie may be the first thought that comes to mind especially if you’re a baby boomer. Hobie revolutionized an industry introducing a new and exciting way to have fun on the open sea on a small catamaran boat with twin hull design. The catamaran industry sprung up quickly creating catamaran sailboats, catamaran boats, catamaran houseboats, catamaran yachts, skater boats, catamaran speed boats, catamaran power boats and on to the latest development within the last decade catamaran mega yachts over 100’ in length.

The catamaran multihull design has become popular with multi-use design capabilities ranging from luxury power catamarans to catamaran sport fishing boats, both for private and commercial use as in the case of the yacht charter industry.

A typical design layout will include the following:

§Lower deck: Swim platform; three to five guest cabins depending on size of catamaran with bath or shower rooms; engine room is typically amidships; and crew quarters are placed forward.

§Main deck: sheltered exterior deck often used for casual dining aft leads into the salon; galley and dining room; entrances for easier access are usually located amidships; owner's suite is usually located forward.

§Upper deck exterior deck aft, often used for entertaining and outdoor dining; inside or outside bar

§Flybridge: Can be open or closed. Top most navigational point on the boat; seating, dining and lounges can be configured to accommodate the use by all guests.

More and more power catamarans are being seen in the Caribbean and Mediterranean Sea. The latest technological developments in commercial shipping allowing for shipments of multiple large yachts across the Atlantic have created a large Caribbean yacht charter market.

Massive growth was recorded between 2000 and 2008 in the large private yacht and super luxury yacht sectors in regards to number, size, and popularity.

Multihulls Magazine a power catamaran magazine has reported current market conditions in the table below.*

As you can see power catamaran manufactures will benefit from the current market conditions.

Catamarans are known for their cost-effective, fuel efficiencies, performance, stability, speed, and innovative design infused with state-of-the-art technologies, the latest innovation being solar powered catamarans. Turanor PlanetSolar is the world’s largest solar powered catamaran at 31 meters registered in Switzerland, the boat launched March 31, 2010 whose plan is to circumnavigate the world on solar power only.

Horizon Power Catamaran is a reputable and highly regarded manufacture in the catamaran industry. Horizon has just started production on its latest engineered design masterpiece the PC58 integrating state-of-the-art technologies with high-end luxury and amenities. Fully customizable interior design and exterior features which can be configured for entertainment, sport-fishing, charters, long and short range cruising plus more.

The catamaran industry is a diverse and emerging industry with more and more yachting enthusiasts abandoning their traditional monohull yacht construction for the benefits of a multihull design.
