Should We Consider A Tankless Water Heater?

Author : Tom Irvine

Tankless Water Heater (also called on demand water heater) instantly heats water, and does not retain any water internally. Why should we consider a tankless water heater? A simple answer: They are far more efficient. Tankless water heaters are the most efficient gas or electric heater.

Endless hot water is the selling point among tankless water heaters. You're not having to pay to the hot water that is not in use. It is especially nice to have if you're not using that much, i.e. no kids, wash cloths on cold, ect. They also use less space. You can move it outside and attach it to the wall and occupy very little space. Then u can clear out the closet for storage. Tankless water heaters will heat water to temperature you set by remote control. If you want to take 105F degree shower, you set temperature to 105! You don't have to turn on cold to mix with hot. Heater will send you the hot water that you set, it will restrict the flow in order to heat water to desired temperature, so winter temperature will restrict it more than summer.

They last 2 times longer than a tank heater, when properly maintained. An average savings of 40% on gas usage. The key is to invest in a quality unit like Noritz. Do not get from a brand that you will not be able to find next year. Return rate on the "toys" they sell in box store is over 50% because of the fact they are too small to deliver a satifactory amount of hot water. Quality units are definitely becoming extremely popular. Tankless water heaters save you money by eliminating the need to constantly heat a tank of water. They also help conserve water by not wasting water while you are waiting to get hot water from a conventional tank heater.

Manufactures say that you can save up to 30% on your bill. The US government is offering a 300 dollar rebate to lower the upfront cost.

However, if you decided to go with the tankless water heater, several things I would suggest:

1) Go with an electric one or a gas one. It is because they draw a very heavy electrical load when in use, which creates a signifcant drop in voltage, temporarily. And sometimes, you may have to upgrade your power settings at home since you may not have sufficient power available to operate it. My advise is that go with gas if at all possible.

2) Make sure it is close to both bathroom and kitchen. Otherwise, you may waste cold water until the hot water comes, and you will need pay to insulate the pipes too.
