Ideal Villa Holidays

Author : Mark Bartley

We have all seen the nostalgic photographs of happy groups of people at holiday camps at various places along the British coastline. Camps like these were popular places in the UK and, for several decades after they were first established in the 1930's, the leading holiday camp companies did very well commercially. It was only the emergence of another type of group accommodation tourism model, this time the hotel-based package holiday abroad, that started the decline of the camp-based holiday at home. The package holiday format was facilitated by cheaper short-haul air travel and led to the development of several new holiday destinations across southern Europe. Most of these resorts developed on the back of vast construction projects, creating lots of new hotels, some that could cater for many hundreds of people in a single facility.

It seems that many people are now seeking a different type of holiday, one where you are able to find a little more privacy, seclusion and peace. The type of holiday where you can relax in your own space, not be restricted by hotel timetables and enjoy the flexibility to do whatever you want, whenever you want. That style of break is perfectly delivered by the villa holiday, an increasingly popular form of vacation that has experienced a massive leap in demand over the past few years.

Villa holidays have become more popular for a variety of reasons. As the functional life of many hotels built in the seventies was coming to an end, they would have required expensive refurbishments, even to continue their current form of use. That left many holiday companies, particularly those with portfolios of hotel properties, with a dilemma and a decision process that carried some risk. Should they invest again in the hotel format or transition to the new villa style holidays? Many decided to go down the villa route, after seeing the success that villa holidays were experiencing, Also, new villas were becoming available as many people bought second properties in places like Spain and Turkey, either as retirement investments or new permanent homes. One means of securing a useful source of income is to hire out the villa property during the peak holiday periods. Some people choose to manage this themselves, others use holiday letting companies, while many use villa holiday companies to manage the whole process for them. Some of the more established villa companies now have enviable portfolios of villas in many of the most desirable locations all over the world.

Some what considerations need to be made when selecting the ideal property for your villa holiday?. Once those considerations have been evaluated and criteria entered into a villa holiday search system, a selection of villas will be presented and it is then that some additional decisions have to be made. Just looking at a list of villas and their attractive photographs is enough to get anyone excited about their holiday to come, but other factors come into play if you are to select the right type of villa for your ideal break.

A large swimming pool may be an attractive feature for some, but perhaps not for those with very young children. If you are heading to a hot climate, do you require your villa to offer air conditioning systems, at least in the bedrooms to help you get a good night's sleep? Also, remote, rural locations are enjoyed by many villas, so how you will get about needs to be thought about. Hiring a car will mean getting to the local shops or the beach may not be a problem, but if you aim to go on foot then distances should be reasonable not to become a burden. Some villas may be situated nearer to built-up districts, so you may wish to consider how much noise you are likely to be faced with. A bustling town centre or airport flight path will always lead to some daily noise and a lively nightclub area may not suit everybody, especially families with little ones.

That said, one of the main benefits of a villa holiday is the amount of choice offered. Not only in being offered a wide choice of villa types, but also in the things you are free to do once you are on your holiday. Freedom, flexibility, seclusion, relaxation and choice are the things that sum up the villa holiday and they are increasingly the preferred type of holiday for many thousands of people.
