Author : Richie Chan

Millions of folks through out the world recognize and delight in chess, a challenging game of skill and strategy. When we think of a regular wooden chess set, most people would think of a checkered board and 32 game pieces, with each piece having a basic design. This simplistic chess design is adopted as a general style for most commercially manufactured chess sets and those utilized in tournaments, along with the usual time clocks. For most however, this basic style is mundane, which is why fantasy chess sets have been produced.

Fundamentally, when we say fantasy chess set, it is a type of chess set where one can generally stumble on fantasy-related themes and styles for the various chess pieces and board. From simplistic designs, like the application of shapes for the chess pieces, to opulent and highly intricate styles, like the Lord of the Rings chess set or the Aliens VS Predator chess set, there are so many fantasy styles obtainable. Of course, with its fun and exciting aesthetics, it is typically viewed more of as a decorative piece than a game board, which is why most of this kind of chess set are expensive, such as the fantasy crystal chess set.

There is a variety of fantasy-inspired styles one can readily stumble on in different antique retailers, online retailers, and discount supplies outlets. A well known fantasy design employed in many chess sets are patterned after combats or wars, like the Battle Culloden Chess Set, that includes various soldiers and officers as the chess pieces. Some other popular war themed fantasy chess sets are the medieval sets, which have tremendously elaborate knight, soldier, king, and queen pieces.

Pop culture icons, such as the Simpsons, Star Wars, Robin Hood, dragons, Harry Potter, and so many more, are also famous themes for fantasy sets. A particularly well-known chess set is the Star Trek 3D Chess Set, which was introduced to the world, in line with the series. This highly innovative chess set features a three dimensional chess game that is played on several chess boards that are placed on numerous stands. Another unconventional chess set is the Chess 4, which allows four players to concurrently play on a chess board. There were two times the number of pieces and boxes in the set.

Naturally, fantasy chess sets are not only constrained to that. There are many 3D chess games that are usable on computers, which may feature custom settings. These not only offer an addicting enjoyment but also an informative experience for beginners.

The fantasy world is a world rich in imagination and enjoyment. Whether it is mythical beasts, castles, and even popular culture themes, fantasy is almost better than reality. Even with chess sets, the application of fantasy themes is generally a welcome add-on for many folks.
