India, with its huge extension and diverse climate, is a splendid concoction of different religions, cultures, festivals, cuisines, ethnic diversity and languages. It is also one of the 17 countries in the world that has 3 mega-biodiversity hotspots, owing to its diverse climatic and topographical variations. It is the part of Indo-Malaya eco-zone and contains an amazing diversity of flora and fauna. India is home to over a thousand species of mammals, 1200 species of birds, 275 species of amphibians, 400 species of reptiles and thousands of species of fish, among others. Its national animal – the tiger represents the strength and grace in essence, while as the national bird with its multi-colored patterns symbolizes India's unity in multi-cultural diversity. The diverse environments in India include many endemic species from Hangul deer in the Himalayan reaches to the Indian Gharial and the Ganges Dolphin in the Ganges; from Markhor (Himalayan wild goat) to the one-horned Rhinoceroes in the north-east.

After the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, a number of national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, bird sanctuaries, game reserves, zoological parks, wetlands and biosphere reserves have been established in India. These core areas have on one hand ensured the conservation of threatened wildlife species, and on the other hand, they form an indispensable part of tourism in India. There are 95 National parks, 496 Wildlife sanctuaries and 15 Biosphere reserves in India. Most popular among them are Jim Corbett National Park (Uttaranchal), Silent valley National park (Kerala), Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary (Gujarat), Bharatpur Wildlife sanctuary (Rajasthan), Dachigam National Park (J&K), The Great Himalayan National Park (Himachal Pradesh), Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve (West Bengal ) , Chilka Lake (Orissa), Marine National park (Karnataka) among others. Most of these national parks offer different wildlife tour packages, safaris and expeditions to the tourists.

Himalayan ranges form one of the Biodiversity hotspots in the Asian sub-continent. Himalayas are home to a huge diversity of wildlife including the Snow Leopard, the Brown Bear, the Himalayan Civet, Markhoor Goat, the Indian Otter, the Red deer, the Golden Cat, Black bear, Golden Langur, the Himalayan tree-shrew, Himalayan Pit-viper, the Chital deer, the pronghorn antelope besides a number of endemic as well as migratory bird species. These include the Partridge, the black–necked Crane, the Brahmani duck, the golden eagle, the Sarus Crane and Himalayan wild goose, among others.

There are a number of national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in the northern region of India, the most prominent being the Great Himalayan National park in Himachal Pradesh. It attracts a number of tourists each year, especially during the summers. The wildlife sanctuary at Hrishikesh in Uttaranchal is another marvelous wildlife lover's destination. Dachigam National Park in Kashmir presents a wonderful diversity of animals as well as breath-taking scenery. The prominent fauna of Dachigam National Park includes the Himalayan Hangul deer, the Brown bear, the snow leopard, Golden langur, the spotted deer, and the musk deer, among others.
