How To Care For Your Lawn

Author : Mark Bartley

People have different approaches to various household tasks. There are those who actually enjoy an hour or two of spring cleaning , while others sigh with despair or look in horror when asked to help with the washing or vacuuming. A similar situation exists in the garden too. There are more than enough physical or tedious chores associated with keeping gardens tidy, but there are plenty of people who will enjoy any gardening task, simply appreciating the chance to be outdoors.

Keeping a lawn tidy with regular cutting is something that would seem to fit into the "tedious" category of gardening jobs, but mowing the lawn is something many people find strangely therapeutic and pleasurable. Lawn care tasks come in many forms, some are carried out only once or twice each year and involve a modicum of hard effort, such as scarifying or spiking, while others simply involve spreading some fertilizer or cutting the edges. Cutting a lawn is naturally a more frequent activity, especially during the summer months, yet it can also be strangely satisfying.

There are also very few gardening jobs that can create such an immediate improvement so quickly. What looks just like any other patch of well-used unloved lawn suddenly undergoes a miraculous transformation. Shorter, more even blades of grass quickly look so much neater, a roller accurately leans the blades in darker and lighter strips, in one direction along one line and then in the opposite direction on the following one. And when the grass clippings are collected at the same time, the end result can be a colourful, almost shining lawn area, something the very few people could fail to adore.

So what does it take to create such a beautiful looking lawn? Well of course a little preparation and careful maintenance over the whole year is the key to this. Lawn care doesn't suddenly start in late spring and bring quick results. As any enthusiastic gardener or commercial green keeper will tell you, a great looking lawn requires attention on a regular basis and in fact the glory months during the summer are the ones where tasks simplify and opportunities to enjoy the lawn increase.

Preparation for a summer of lawn love starts right back at the end of the previous summer, when lawn growth is starting to slow down and the autumn leaf fall is just starting. It is at this time that it pays dividends to look carefully at the needs of your lawn and working out just what it needs and how you are going to accomplish that. That will almost certainly include picking up fallen leaves and twigs on a regular basis, slowly raising your mowing height as lawn growth slows and then aerating your lawn to free up air flow. You will also have to decide whether you have any issues with weeds or moss and also setting your lawn up with some nutrition before winter sets in. Dressing the lawn with a special autumn sand and loam mix is something most professional groundsmen will apply to cricket squares, golf greens or bowling greens and it will normally prove beneficial to a domestic lawn too.

Once winter finally arrives and the lawn stops growing it's time to take a break and wait until the spring weather returns, warmer days are more frequent, hours of daylight increase and lawns start a new growing season.

Again this can be a busy time for those concerned with lawn care, repeating some of the jobs that were done back in autumn, but the rewards are only just around the corner. With that short list of lawn care tasks taken care of, spring will soon be in full swing and you'll be able to look forward to many happy and satisfying hours mowing your lovely lawn and enjoying the long, relaxing days of summer.
