The Perfect Villa Holiday

Author : Mark Bartley

When it comes to deciding where to go for a typical hotel/beach holiday in the sun, the choice of locations is varied but usually limited to a choice of tried and tested places selected by the tour operators. In any given tourist region, the larger hotels that are organised to look after package-based travellers are usually situated in particular areas. Of course there are good reasons for that. By grouping hotels together transfer journeys become more efficient for tour operators to organise. Also facilities and tourist theme parks tend to be larger and better given the larger volume of tourists that are present in a single area.

However when it comes to villa holidays a whole landscape of alternative destinations opens up. Travellers are no longer constrained to the major resort areas or the places that already have established holiday market infrastructure. Those opting for a villa holiday are offered a wide range of choices from beach-front properties, quiet inland valley areas, villas in the centres of old towns and places high up in the mountains. One of the beauties of a villa holiday is the freedom and lack of limitations it provides and, by offering a wider choice of holiday destinations, that flexibility starts at home before the holiday has even begun.

When faced with the job of booking a holiday in a villa, many tourists may already have a resort area in mind, perhaps somewhere they have visited previously on a hotel-based trip. However before pressing that all-important "book now" key, it is suggested that they stop and investigate a little further the options available to them. Take an island like Mallorca for example which has quite a few popular seafront resorts such as Magaluf, Alcudia, Cala Millor or Cala Bona. What many people don't realise is that Mallorca has many more wonderful towns and villages away from these popular resorts, most of which are seldom experienced by package holiday tourists. Fortunately there are villas available for rent in many of these locations. Places such as Sineu, Campanet, Bunyola and Felanitx offer a more authentic Mallorca experience, while Soller, Pollensa and Deia are all very attractive towns that have escaped any large-scale tourism development. Opting for a villa in any of these places offers the same holiday climate as the major resorts, but includes a degree of privacy and provides a more relaxing environment for those who use their holiday time to get away from the stresses and bustle of busy day-to-day life.

Similar options exist on the nearby island of Menorca and on the other Balearic favourite Ibiza, where there are many luxurious villas available away from the typical hotel areas. While the younger visitors tend to opt for either Ibiza Town or San Antonio, with their enviable selection of world famous night clubs, and families will prefer resorts like Cala d'en Bou or Playa d'en Bossa, there are many more quiet beaches and bays within easy reach of the island's luxury villas. At the top of Ibiza, Portinatx offers several villas with private swimming pools surrounded by pine trees. On the west coast the beach at Puerto de San Miguel or inland at Es Cana, home of the famous hippy market, there are all kinds of villas suited for young families, older travellers or larger groups of friends.

But these are not the only holiday islands that provide a superb choice of villas for rental. The Greek islands of Corfu, Zante and Lefkas have, for many years, been popular choices with people looking for a peaceful holiday. One of the newest villas holiday destinations however is southern Turkey. The region is quickly matching many of the more traditional European holiday regions in terms of visitor numbers and accommodation choices. Turkey's popular resort destinations of Bodrum, Antalya and Dalaman are all well served by convenient airports and offer a wide choice of modern hotels, but they now also offer some superb villa holiday choices. There are even dedicated villa complexes set inland, which offer the services of a hotel combined with the privacy and peacefulness of a private villa.

Villa holidays are now a well developed alternative to the typical hotel vacation with many well known travel operators providing choices of both types of holiday.
