What Is A Package Holiday

Author : Mark Bartley

Holidays are all about enjoyment, beautiful locations and, for people with busy day-to-day lives, relaxation. Letting someone else take the strain and look after the cleaning, cooking and all the other jobs you would be faced with at home is very de-stressing. That is one of the main reasons why package holidays became very popular, as the relaxation process is able to start right from the moment the holiday is booked, with a holiday company taking care of all the travel arrangements allowing the traveller to focus on packing their luggage and looking forward to the trip.

A certain Thomas Cook is credited with establishing the first package holidays 150 years ago, which were initially short trips by rail to different parts of the UK. Since that time the concept of bundled holiday offerings has grown to become the norm when arranging travel breaks and now millions of people across the world book a package break as their preferred holiday option.

The growing popularity of package holidays has helped the expansion of many parts of the travel business such as charter flights and helped establish new tourist-specific areas in different parts of Europe such as the southern coast of Spain and various Mediterranean islands. Of course many people still opt for independent travel, choosing to book their own flights, transfers and accommodation separately, but while this offers more flexibility normally, it will frequently cost more and carries the risk of relying on more than one provider should something go wrong.

Destinations like Benidorm, Greek Islands such as Corfu and the regions close to Faro in Portugal were some of the original package holiday offerings. Package destinations have expanded hugely since those early days and include well known destinations such as Turkey, Mallorca, Malta and many smaller Mediterranean islands too. But Europe is not the only area to benefit from the package holiday explosion. Places like Florida and some Caribbean Islands also became more affordable and now package breaks are provided to virtually anywhere in the world including Mexico, Australia, Italy, Australia, Egypt and South Africa.

The explosion of technology and expansion of promotion and purchasing options as worked hand-in-hand with package break development, both for providers and customers. The internet now means that many more travel operators, not just the largest, can communicate with potential new customers and that has significantly increased both the number and type of package holidays on offer.

Packaging has also been a catalyst in driving down the cost of holidays. Holidays of this type are usually more affordable due to the block bookings that are made by travel operators, as volume bookings put them in a better position to negotiate and reserve flights and hotel rooms at rates lower than those available to the independent traveller. By reserving groups of rooms for example, sometimes whole hotels for an entire holiday period, operators create an almost guaranteed full season for a hotel, reducing risk and allowing hotels to operate more efficiently. That cost efficiency can then be passed onto the package holiday company, who in turn is able to offer lower priced breaks to its travellers.

Modern package holidays quite often include more than just flight and accommodation services. Some holidays now include all food and drink for the duration of the holiday (all inclusive holidays) while others bundle other services such as car hire and excursions. The more luxurious package holidays may even include chauffeur transport to and from the home airport.

As package holidays evolve to include almost every component of a typical holiday, the customer is able to enjoy the experience knowing that everything is being taken care of by the travel operator. They really are a great way to ensure a completely relaxing break.
