Lawn Care Checklist

Author : Mark Bartley

It is fair to say that most gardens in our green and pleasant land have a lawn. After all lawns have played a core role in British garden design for hundreds of years now and form the structure around which the rest of the garden layout develops. Perhaps it's our mild yet damp weather, which makes lawns easy to look after or the typical ways in which we spend time in our gardens which mean the typical green lawn is almost an expected feature. Homes of every size all over the country usually boast at least one area of grass and now most new houses will be sold complete with a laid lawn of turf. Housing developers know that all homes look more attractive and sell more easily when surrounded by a good looking lawn.

Although many people would dearly like to have a beautifully manicured lawn, free of weeds and lush green in colour, the thought of all the hard labour that might involve can be slightly daunting. Well the good news is that lawn care can be a very efficient and quick. By carrying out a few well-timed sessions of straight forward maintenance tasks and using some of today's modern lawn care products, a beautiful green lawn is within the reach of even the most inexperienced and time-restricted gardeners.

In the past creating a healthy and good looking lawn could have involved many hours of hard, tedious work and. Sweeping, raking, aerating, mowing, forking, rolling â€" the list of tasks that involved long stints of hard effort seemed endless. It was almost enough to frighten off even the most determined gardener. Fortunately these days things are different thanks to lower cost garden machinery and new lawn care products.

A healthy, vigorously growing lawn will require cutting every week during most of the summer so a good motorised lawnmower will quickly earn its keep as one of the essential lawn care tools. Cheap electric scarifiers do a great job now so one of the most physical jobs of the past is made much easier. Other electric tools that help make lawn care less demanding include electric strimmers and lawn edgers.

Development of grass seed has also been making advances too. Commercially produced seed now comes in numerous versions, all targeted at specific applications. Some varieties are designed to be easy care variants, more weed resistant and slower growing to reduce mowing, while others are developed to be more resiliant to heavy use for sports fields and domestic lawns. There are special seed mixes for cricket pitches, lawn tennis courts and other sports. Some seeds are now sold pre-coated with a nutrient layer that will assist the seed in becoming established when it is first sowed.

By selecting the most suitable seed variety, sowing the lawn correctly and in the correct weather conditions to allow a healthy root system to develop and then making sure any developing problems are quickly taken care of, a great looking lawn can be well within the reach of anyone.

Lawns don't require dedicated attention all year round, in fact most of the effort is focussed into two distinct periods In spring the lawn will benefit from some extra attention to set things up for the growing season ahead, while in autumn some additional maintenance jobs will be required to set the lawn up for a quiet, restful dormant period during the winter months. So in fact, lawn care is quite simple. Besides the occasional application of a lawn nutrient and a selective weed control treatment, there is very little to worry about other than mowing the lawn as it grows.

So by carrying out a few simple lawn care tasks, that attractive green lawn can be ready for your and your friends to enjoy.
