Lower Back Pain Caused By Sciatica Is Often Treated Effectively By Chiropractors

Author : Stephen Daniels

It is estimated that one in four U.S. adults experiences some form of lower back pain every year, and this often debilitating discomfort is also one of the primary reasons for booking chiropractic appointments. Chiropractors have been using multiple techniques in treating lower back pain for more than one hundred years.

Whether active or sedentary, people engage in behaviors almost daily that negatively impact their body's well being, without even realizing it. Improperly organized work stations, poor posture, prolonged sitting, improper lifting and repeated or unbalanced torso motion are common actions that can wreak havoc with someone's back. Old injuries, smoking, poor diet, automobile accidents, birth defects and inactivity can contribute to the pain also.

The lower back is comprised of the lumbar vertebrae, discs that separate the vertebrae, joints, nerves and various muscles. The L4 - L5 area of the spine is the most commonly injured area. The lumbar vertebrae lie directly between the pelvis and upper torso, and are constantly shifted, jerked around and tensed. With so many tissues and bones manipulated by daily life and natural degeneration, it is no wonder that this area of the body is so commonly injured.

The sciatic nerve also plays a part in lower back pain. The sciatic nerve, which is the largest nerve in the body, runs from the lumbar region of the spine down through the buttocks and down the back of the thighs to just below the knees. Sciatica is caused by herniated discs in the spine or other inflammation of the sciatic nerve. This can be due to the spine's misalignment, a herniated disc, pregnancy and childbirth and even diabetes.

Because Chiropractors work primarily on the back and spine, their licensing process is heavily regulated. The educational and training program is long and arduous, followed by at least two years of clinical practice under close supervision. Then they must pass the license testing before they can hang out their own shingle. In addition, in most states, chiropractors must complete hours of continued studies each year in order to maintain their license, and to keep current in new procedures and equipment that is available for their practices.

The doctors who emerge from this long process are skilled in a variety of therapeutic procedures and are able to provide dynamic treatment programs to alleviate pain, especially in the back and spine.

Most new patient consultations with a chiropractor start with a discussion about "where you hurt." The doctor needs to make some type of diagnosis about your problem before treatment begins in order to prevent additional injury.

The diagnostic process includes taking a complete medical history, a physical exam, and potentially also a neurological examination. Other testing that might be indicated includes x-rays, MRI, CT scan and/or electro-diagnostic tests (nerve conduction velocity, electromyography). The results of these exams will help the chiropractor determine if spinal adjustments and other chiropractic therapies would be helpful or contra-indicated.

With regular visits to your chiropractor, your progress will be evaluated and treatment plans adjusted to assuage your lower back pain, regardless of the cause. During this process the goal is to help your body heal itself and ultimately return your body to the well functioning machine it is meant to be.
