Setting Your Baby Budget

Author : William Jason

Unless you are lucky enough to be wealthy, then almost every new couple who is expecting, is going to have to set a budget for all of the new baby items that they're going to have to buy. I went through this with my wife with our first child, and it is definitely an overwhelming experience that you must prepare yourself for. I guarantee you that whenever you walk into a baby store for the first time, especially if you are a guy, your head is going to spin. Most guys, much like myself, are not used to dealing with baby items, and I simply had no clue how expensive they actually were. By the time my wife and I got done shopping the first week for our baby after we found out she was pregnant, we had spent almost $800. That is when we quickly realize we were going to have to set a budget for ourselves, and this was probably the best thing we ever did.

The first thing you have to do whenever you are making a budget for your baby, is to set priorities, and to allocate your money into the products that are the most important. The first thing you really need to look at is the car seat in the crib, and this is where you want to invest most of your money. Buying a safe crib for your baby should be your number one priority, and don't be afraid to spend a good portion of your money here. This is where your baby will be spending most of his or her time in the beginning, well until they are a toddler. The next thing you want to invest your money into, is the car seat. It is extremely important to have a high-quality car seat that is brand-new. I highly suggest against accepting a used car seat, as there are a number of hidden dangers with them. You definitely want to buy one new, if you can afford it.

After you have set aside funds for both of these extremely important items, then it is up to you to prioritize what else you need to buy for your baby. My wife and I were in the fortunate position to accept a lot of used clothing and toys from family members who had just had children several years before. Keep in mind, that this is one of the best ways to save money, so don't be afraid to ask friends and family if they have any baby items that you can have.
