A food consultant is someone who has a sound knowledge in the food industry and can offer assistance in starting a food business, or re-branding a food business. He has a thorough knowledge as to what will work and what can fail in the consumer market. A food consultant can offer help, advice and various success solutions to the new entrants in the field and older ones who are not doing well.

Food consulting is a responsibility that is not a degree which can be acquired by exam. It is a position that is acquired after years of experience in the food industry. With vast and deep knowledge in this field, a consultant can guide different faculties in this arena. It might be a food retailing field, or beginning a restaurants and the 'do's and don'ts in the restaurant industry. He can be an expert in marketing the food. Some food consultants are specialist in specified filed, like they might be pizza marketing experts or cake marketing experts etc. Thus food consulting is a vast field which can be generally applied or even specified to a particular area.

Many a time's a company, or a brand fails, because it has not been presented well. Sometimes it's the image that is the issue, and not the product. A consultant is the right person to understand the reason behind the product and the consumer disharmony. Knowing the in and out of this industry, he can assist the sinking company to review its stand, and help it revive by changing the strategy, packaging or even changing the logo. He can also be involved in the product by changing the shape or the color of the product.

A job of a consultant requires years of work experience in restaurants and a sound knowledge. Which food goes well with which beverage, which are complimentary, which food item is contraindicated in a particular combination, presentation etc are some of the important criteria that a food consultant looks into.

A bakery item for example needs to have a shelf life. It must also be inviting in its looks and presentation besides taste. A restaurant food has to be presented and served well. There are restaurant service equipments that need to be looked into, and restaurant mannerisms that every employee of the catering industry has to follow. Thus the consulting involves every corner and different food types too.

A food consultant knows how to mange cost and reduce the production cost and augment the profit without affecting the sales. Thus he can be the right support when you want to change your strategy to rise from loss.

These consulting jobs are well paying. Usually these are contract based jobs. Small restaurants cannot afford a good consultant. Usually, it is a fancy restaurant that needs to stand up above it its star value that relies on its consultant so as to be impeccably right in every aspect.

Today there are a number of reputed food consulting experts who are on the advisory committees of various catering institutes, group of restaurants, and food brands. Some even opt to share their experiences and knowledge by writing books and conducting television shows.
