A cluttered habitat may not be a symptom of an apathetic or dispassionate occupant, it can be a caution of weighty healthy mind issues. The National Study Group On Chronic Disorganization lists five levels of untidiness, which is in many instances also known as 'hoarding'.

These levels reach from a general amount of untidiness in an habitat that has no conspicuous amount of aroma, dirt or damage ranging to level five with offensive smells, structural dilapidation, infestation and unlivable conditions. Fortunately most households happen into the first kind.

Level two is where issues can be seen, and if you are dwelling a second tier habitat, you already appreciate the difference. The NSGCD defines the second tier as a household with no less than a single door obstructed, a major appliance not operative for longer than 6 months, and some pet odor (light waste spotting, dander, limited caged pet care).

The living areas of a level two domicile have untidiness such that it impedes utility of more than 2 rooms, a restricting of the passageways, minimal evidence of housekeeping, bearable but not enjoyable odors, light mould and reasonably unwashed food prep areas.

A messy household propogates a self-fueling detrimental emotional spiral. The untidiness begins a feeling of instability rather than happiness, and eliminating it can be seen as a mission beyond the ability of its maker.

A kitchen that has become useless from mess or simple tumble generally means that the occupants have a tendency eat quick meals which is less healthy. Indirectly an untidy habitation can be partly responsible for cardiovascular diseases. And as most medicines are ingested with water, and often with food, some doses may be omitted or the whole prescription skipped altogether.

A nonfunctional washer or dryer may denote that clothes go unwashed and wearing dirty clothes with an displeasing stench may also preserve a detrimental cycle in the responses from other people the hoarder may draw near.

Laundry also contributes to a cluttered household, and one of the few things that a messy householder should purchase is a well-built laundry hamper for each inhabitant of the house.

There have been mass causal connections made between clinical depression and untidiness. The depressed person endures a sense of discontinuity from themselves and their surroundings, often accompanied with the often seen lack of drive. It is believed that one tends to incite the other.

Cleaning one's habitat can have a comforting, ritualistic attribute to its enactment. If security and comfort can be derived from familiarity with one's environment, then the handling, prophylaxis and reinstatement of items within the habitat re-familiarizes the occupant with the home. In addition to the sense of comfort comes an atmosphere of accomplishment that overrides the omnipresent dissatisfaction and conquest of an overwhelming tumble.

Even Feng Shui has teaching against clutter, it states that physical things restrict the pathway of chi, and on the psychological level that is scientifically factual.

To help get over a cluttered house, straighten up as you go. Don't make it more difficult by adding more to the disarray, but make an agreement to hold it at its present level. Then work on shrinking it. Break it up into controllable quantities defined by time, with efforts of no more time than you presently spend on other activities. If your attention span is a half hour, clean for thirty minutes.

Setting a schedule often will ease the way too, and apply yourself it.

And if none of this is effective, seek aid. Contact a mental health provider and ask for a reference. You can also find help in family members. A home can be not dirty and healthful.
