The Importance Of The Proper Static Caravan Insurance

Author : Sam Paul

The owners of static caravans or holiday homes have a unique set of insurance needs: needs that are often not quite met by a standard insurance policy. For the most part, this is down to a simple lack of expertise on the part of the company doing the insuring; combined, of course, with a lack of experience in policy making on the part of the caravan owners. Most insurance companies have no real experience with the vicissitudes of static caravan ownership: and most static caravan owners, while well aware of the kinds of things that can go wrong with their holiday homes, are not sufficiently au fait with insurance policy language to really know if their van has been properly covered or not. To get genuinely reliable insurance for caravans, you really need to turn to a company that has some experience with and knowledge of the kind of thing you are trying to protect yourself against.

One of the United Kingdom’s most respected and well-attended caravan bodies, NACO has recently started providing insurance of its own, precisely in answer to this rather special need. The body, which has been providing advice and assistance to caravan owners for decades, is now in a position to offer its own static caravan insurance policies, with cover carefully drawn up to reflect the realities of life with a mobile home: and a UK based call centre with a no waiting policy thrown in for good measure.

The realities of life, as they apply to the ownership and use of a static caravan can at first glance seem like the kinds of things that no normal insurer would cover against at all. This is probably why getting a good static insurance policy has been so difficult to do: and why the new policy being offered by this UK based caravanning advice bureau is likely to change things for the better. A static caravan owner knows, for example, that he or she is going to be leaving his or her pride and joy alone for months on end, sometimes even for longer than a year between visits. Static caravan insurance needs to understand this – and also to understand that breaking into even the best locked van in the country is a piece of cake for anyone with five minutes to spare and access to a knife or a screw driver. Because statics tend to be sited on caravan parks, and because caravan parks tend to be empty during bad weather, there are large periods of time when a static is left completely undefended and extremely easy to ransack. The right insurance policy for the static owner, then, must be able to cover for this ever present risk without driving premiums up through the roof.

All insurance for caravans should be designed to offer significant repair protection against weather damage, too. Again because they get left alone for long periods of time, statics are uniquely vulnerable to damage caused by wind and damp – which can go unnoticed for months, if it happens at the wrong time. Look for an insurance policy that gives good payout protection for damage that may have been mild when first sustained, but could have been made much worse by being unnoticed for months.
