How To Not Get Pickpocketed While On A Tour

Author : Dakota Lindal

South Africa has got many great tour destinations. You can find deals on offer for Soweto tours all around the province of Gauteng. While it is a great plan to find a reputable tour operator, there are a number of other dangers to be careful of.

One of the dangers of a tour in any country is pickpockets. There are a few steps you can take to protect yourself from these people of dubious character.

Protect your Valuables

Most thieves are looking to get your passport and valuables. So if you are in a foreign country and on a tour, like, in the case of South Africa, a Sun city tour, keep these safe. You should never carry your wallet in your back pocket, no matter how tight your trousers are, pickpockets are way too fast for you to stop them, even if you do feel it happening. A better idea is to have a money belt hidden under your clothes. Try not to keep anything valuable in a backpack which you may put down at some stage or leave unguarded for even a minute. If you carry a handbag, make sure that it zips closed completely so that sticky fingers cannot go into it.

Try Not To Look Like a Victim

Try not to look like a tourist as pickpockets target them. This is because tourists tend to carry a lot of cash and cards on them. If you are on a tour look like you know where you are going, or that you are with someone who does. This makes you less of a target to pickpockets. Be aware of your surroundings at all times and do not walk around staring in wonder at all you survey. This is where being in a guided tour comes in handy. You are in a group and you can all look out for each other, plus you will have a guide with you who knows where he is going and the pickpockets will see that as a warning to stay away.

Come Prepared

You should always prepare for the worst when you visit a foreign country. Keep note of the numbers of your travellers cheques so that you can get them stopped and replaced if they get stolen. Also do not carry large amounts of cash or credit cards with a high balance available on them. Keep things like your passport in the hotel safe. That way it is less likely that it will be stolen and if it is, the security system will most likely be able to pinpoint who did it.

So if you are on a Soweto tour in South Africa, take precautions to protect yourself from unscrupulous villains who would like to make a quick buck out of an unwary tourist. Keep your valuables safe, go on a guided tour not on your own so that you are part of a group and so not look like a victim. Leave irreplaceable documents in your hotel room safe. This goes for any country though, not just South Africa.
