Patience – The Key To Perfect Potty Training Of Your Dog

Author : Rod Pinto

As in humans, dogs also need to be trained when they are young. Young puppies are more adaptable to training and are flexible in their approach to training methods than a grown up dog. When it comes to potty training, it is more easily done with young puppies than adult dogs that are not housebroken.

The most important aspect of potty training is timing. Young puppies normally pee or poop out within 15 to 20 minutes of taking food. It is important to keep the dog out at that moment when their time to poop has come. Once this is done repeatedly for a few days, the dog gets the message that it is expected to be out of the home when its poop time.

There is a method that you can follow for the training to be more effective. Take the dog out as soon as it wakes up, after his breakfast, lunch, naps and after any snacking of considerable size. If the dog whimpers in the night then also it is advisable that you take it out of the house for, it surely can be a sign of wanting to go. Praising the dog in a positive, cheery voice can send the message more loudly that this is what is expected of it every time.

For the few weeks that your dog is potty trained, it is important to feed them only when you have the time to take it outside. It can make the training process easier and your dog will pick up the nuances faster. It is a matter of using your impulse and judgment properly to feed the dog at the right time so that they do not remain thirsty and hungry for long periods just because they are being potty trained.

Potty training for dogs may appear to be easy but it requires loads of patience. The initial few days can be tough and it might seem to be a futile task. But persistence in the methods adopted is necessary to get the breakthrough. Some puppies may learn faster while others may take a few days to get potty trained perfectly. It is important to let the puppy learn at their own speed and not to rush things.

Finally, when things do not go as expected during your potty training sessions, never yell or punish the dog. It is sure fire recipe to delay the process further.
