Can Prepared Meal Replacements Encourage Fat Loss?

Author : Alexander E McLean

There have been little studies to date into weight loss systems that give pre-packaged calorie controlled meals, however 2 new trials have assisted experts to get a better picture.
Study 1: performed on a group of 130 obese women for a year, each was provided with 2 low calorie pre-made meals and liquids every day for the first 3 months, before switching down to just 1 meal per day from 3 months onwards. When eaten alongside 1 hours daily work out they benefited from average fat losses of 12kg in a year.
Trial 2: performed on a group of 442 obese women with BMIs of more than 25, during the course of this assessment they were tested to see which was best – replacement meals or support from a nutritionist…
After 2 years it was found that those given the pre-made meal lost 3 times more body weight than those getting dietician advice: calorie controlled meals (average weight losses 6-7kg), nutritional advice (average dietary losses of 2kg).
Is this research reliable?
Although both trials clearly show the bonuses of accessing dietary support, the 2nd trial is the more reliable of the 2 as experts were able to review pre-packaged meals to nutritional advice.
Yet even with these statistics, these results should be reviewed with caution…
Provided with these meals for 1-2 years for no cost at all, it is hard to decide if these statistics would have been the same if dieters had had to invest in these meals independently or if they had accessed less support.
