Secrets Of Success Stories Of App Stores Selling Application For Mobile Devices:

Author : reeze cooke

There are a number of applications available for various mobile devices and for various operating systems that they run on. Distimo, a Dutch app store analytical firm, in the recent Mobile world Congress 2010, presented in their findings that the following six app stores to be the most popular. They are iTunes App Store, BlackBerry App World, Google Android Market, Nokia Ovi Store, Palm App Catalog and Windows Marketplace for Mobile. This conclusion was made based on the size of the store, growth of the store, most popular applications and the best deals available.
Distimo has own technique of preparing this report, which has been well standardized and accepted. Many factors have been found to influence the success of the app stores for mobile devices and the reason for them being the deciding factors of the market trend are discussed below:
1. Free Versus Paid Apps:
One of the prime influential factors affecting the success of app stores is the availability of the free apps for use. From the survey report, this has been found that Android app store is one of the most popular app stores for selling out apps free, followed by Palm, Apple, BlackBerry, Windows and Nokia.
However, even if you are going to pay a price for an app from a app store, this has to be taken into consideration from the report that Apple, Android and Palm were moderately priced, in contrast to RIM and Microsoft charging twice higher.
2. Store Size And Growth:
There is no doubt that Apple’s app store has been unsurpassable in having the highest number of applications for mobile devices, which is followed by Android, and is much farther behind Apple. Further farther behind are Nokia’s Ovi, followed by BlackBerry. Palm and Windows are very much far behind. Something interesting to note is that Nokia’s Ovi has been recently opened, while Apple’s app store up gradation with newer apps appearing everyday is much higher.
Meanwhile, an update from Microsoft Windows apps, after the release of the Distimo report is that their number of apps in the app stores is much higher than what was cited in the report.
3. Popular Apps:
Sounds simple, but the popularity of the apps depends upon the number of popular apps over the number of compatible devices that they can operate. While Apple’s app store has a number of popular apps, contributing to nearly 58 per cent of the apps developed and available for use in their store were from the popular categories being entertainment and games.
However, what was surprising in the report is that BlackBerry games were much popular, in spite of the fact being that most of these devices being sold out to the enterprise and SMB consumers. Thus, this was a real surprise to find that games apps were 29% popular against the popularity of utilities being only 18%. Overall, Apple’s apps stores seemed to be dominating, and the rest of the other app stores had to work harder and smarter to out beat the target that Apple store is making on the records.
