Using An Agent To Get Cheaper Car Insurance Quotes

Author : Bernardo Burks

Essentially, there are two different types of agents you can use for getting lower car insurance quotes, independent agents and captive agents. Independent agents work with a variety of insurance companies, whereas captive agents only work with one specific insurance company. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. With an independent agent, your agent can do some comparison shopping for you, and will not be locked in to one specific provider of automobile insurance. Later on, if you decide to switch auto insurance companies because you are unsatisfied with the one you currently have auto insurance with, you can retain the same independent agent with a different car insurance company. This allows you to build a long-standing relationship with an independent agent regardless of what auto company currently provides you insurance.

A captive agent, on the other hand, is inextricably locked with his insurance company, so if you decide to switch companies you will not be able to use that agent anymore. However, a captive agent probably has greater understanding of his insurance company's policies and may have more authority to make changes to your policy. A captive agent can suggest what combination of his company's coverage options would be best for you in order to obtain the lowest possible car insurance quotes.

Both types of agents have the advantage of being more familiar with insurance policies and procedures than the average consumer. They can make filing claims easier in the event of an accident, and can suggest changes you can make to lower your premiums. For example, they can suggest that you install anti-theft devices on your car, and then can work with the insurance company to lower your premiums after you have installed an anti-theft device, without the need for you to interact with the insurance company personally. Similar to having your taxes prepared by a professional who might be able to point out deductions you can make, an agent who writes up your insurance policy can point out areas where you may be able to get a discount that you might overlook. This has the effect of lowering the car insurance quotes you get without lowering the coverage you receive.
