A practical and healthy fat loss plan is to set realistic goals of losing a pound or two weekly. You won't be setting yourself up to fall short by trying to lose too much weight too soon, by setting realistic goals you'll be more likely to succeed losing weight. Trying to lose too much weight weekly is unhealthy and unsafe, and you'll be more likely to keep the weight off permanently if you let your body gradually adjust to the weight loss.

Losing a pound per week equates to losing 500 calories daily. Either consume less or burn it off by exercising. The healthy way is by doing both of them while still eating healthy and well balanced meals. If you only have to lose a few pounds then just dieting alone might be sufficient, however if you would like to take off a lot of weight dieting and exercise are a powerful combination. Bad eating habits and not enough physical activity tends to make the metabolism sluggish.

A lot of people don't think of the heart as being a muscle which can be made more powerful. However it's possible to make it healthier through exercising aerobically such as walking, jogging, swimming, bicycling, etc. A diet when combined with exercising has proven to quite effective in reducing weight. But don't be misled into thinking that just because you keep fit you can eat anything you want, it's possible to be fit yet unhealthy.

An even better option is eating the whole fruit instead as it contains the natural fibers that's often taken out when processed. And whenever you can replace fruit or fruit juice in place of sugar or sugar sweeteners.

Make sure to get sufficient protein, you want to lose fat and not muscle. A good source of protein is meat, however whenever possible use lean ground beef, poultry or fish in place of red meat. Protein is the building blocks of muscle building.

Also reduce your intake of saturated fats and trans fatty acids that you consume by substituting them with monosaturated fats (found in olive oil and other heart healthy oils) and omega 3 fish oils. Many of the packaged foods that you eat today probably contain oils and preservatives which could result in undesireable long term health conditions.
